Thattukada-Year 2

Hello everyone! Today, I’m going to talk about “Georgettan’s Thattukada.” If you’ve been a fan of my blog for a while, you may know it’s a shop that I open once a year. This is the second time I’ve opened it, but maybe you didn’t know that part. Last year, I opened the shop at an annual convention run by this organization, and this year, I did the same thing for the same organization at their annual convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Unlike last year when everything was free, this time, we sold products. Last year, the only source of income was through tips. The total income from the three-day conference last year was $386, and we donated it all to charity. This year, we made $292, but someone still owes us $3, so the total really should be $295. All of which will also go to charity. This time, we plan to donate to a local charity in the Grand Rapids area.

At the shop, we didn’t sell any tea; instead, our main products were Indian snacks like Unniyappam, Rose cookies, and various other snacks. We also had some homemade cookies given to us as a gift by a kid, but we didn’t sell many of those. We mainly catered to people with an Indian background, and unfortunately, we didn’t receive much feedback from our customers, except that they enjoyed the snacks and thought it would be better if we offered more variety.

Our shop had a small blue stand with a ceiling and a light attached to it for illumination. We creatively hung the chips from the ceiling to give the stand a traditional Indian look. We had a fake menu with exaggerated prices, and although some people found it funny, others criticized our pricing tactics. Nonetheless, we had some memorable moments, like someone making a $20 donation by paying extra for a bulk order. We had some funny interactions with customers when they got confused by our decorative menu while trying to check the prices. Moreover, we had to start charging for photos because many people wanted pictures with us, which became quite overwhelming and distracting from serving customers.

Throughout the event, there were only three of us working at the shop, including me and my two friends, Rohan and Riya, who are twins. We are all 12 years old.

Looking ahead, we are considering offering tea next year and hoping to attract more people and sell more products. We had a table in the back with all our supplies, and we also tried to sell some souvenirs, but it didn’t seem to be very successful. Sadly, some people stole from us, which was disheartening since the proceeds were meant for charity.

Among the snacks we sold, the rose cookies were the most popular, while the cookies and chips were not as popular. We should have offered banana fries, which I sold at another conference and received a lot of money for.

That’s all for now, but I hope to see you again soon!
