8Mile Pizza from Detroit

Hey everyone! Today, I want to talk about Detroit style pizza, so you don’t have to travel all the way to Detroit to indulge. You can find it right here in Toronto. One standout spot I recently visited is 8 Mile Pizza on Charles St West.

The name “8 Mile Pizza” probably is inspired from Eight Mile Road in Detroit city and the famous movie “8 Mile” made in 2002. The Eight Mile Road road serves as a boundary between Detroit and its suburbs where the American rapper Eminem grew up.

8 Mile Pizza started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, specializes in Detroit style pizza—rectangular pies with a thick, crisp, and chewy crust. What makes this restaurant stand out is the custom sauce that’s mixed with the cheese rather than just layered on top, creating a deliciously cheesy experience. Located in the Yorkville area near the Royal Ontario Museum and Varsity stadium, it’s become a local favourite. The interior is decorated with quirky pizza-themed art displayed on crates, adding to its vibrance. 8 Mile Pizza uses specially manufactured steel pans from Detroit, ensuring each pizza is light and fluffy.

Alongside classics like pepperoni and Margherita, they also offer cheesecakes. Their popularity is on display by their strong presence on Instagram, with around 6000 followers.

The pizzeria’s custom menu features creative pizzas such as the Dodi Pie ($20 for a four-cut), topped with spicy soppressata, mushrooms, l caramelized onions, and garlic cream. We also tried the White Truffle adorned with arugula, flavoured ricotta, and mushrooms marinated with rosemary, olive oil, thyme, and truffle oil. Next time I want to try O’Canada and Cheese Pie.

If you’re a pizza enthusiast, 8 Mile Pizza promises a memorable dining experience right here in Toronto.

So, next time you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and try their gourmet pizzas!

NB: I am sharing the YouTube link to watch the famous song Lose Yourself from the 8th mile movie.

Enjoy the lyrics too! This song is the first rap song to win an Oscar!
