| Flashback | A glimpse or snapshot of a moment in the past. Ex. Back when I was 18, I got my first car, a Honda Civic.When I was 7 years old, my mommy told me go get yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely. |
| Foreshadowing | A hint of what will happen in the near future. Ex. The sky darkened as it filled with flocks of birds quickly flying away….The sounds of thunder in the distance grew louder. |
| Hyperbole | An extreme and unrealistic exaggeration. Ex. I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!I’m so tall, I could touch the moon! |
| Simile | A comparison of two or more things using either the word “like” or “as”. Ex. Betty is as fussy as an old hen.My dad is as stubborn as a mule. |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two or more things NOT using like or as. Ex. Betty is a fussy old hen. My dad is a stubborn old mule. |
| Symbolism | Something, usually an object, that represents something and does not use words. Ex. a dove is a symbol of peaceA pineapple is a symbol of the tropics. |
| Imagery | Words that together, represent a scene, feeling, mood. Imagery often uses words that appeal to more than one of the five senses. The sky was clear and calm, glistening after the rain. Everyone felt peaceful.The bananas were bright and yellow, sitting in the luscious trees, making everyone more focused on the objective. |
