Hello everyone! Today, I’m going to be talking about our family visit to Delphi. We went to the archaeological site, not the museum.

Delphi is considered to be the center of the world in Greek mythology, as Zeus threw down a stone to determine what was the center of the earth and it landed in Delphi. Therefore Delphi is a very important place.

Before the buildings and temples were built there, Delphi was just a place on the side of a mountain. There’s also a small chasm there. In the chasm was Python, a giant python.

Apollo didn’t like the python, and so he killed it. When the snake died, fumes rose up from the cavern that made whoever smell them see the future. A temple was built there, along with a number of other buildings around it.

The way it worked was the Pythia, or the person who would see the Future would sit on a stool then she would inhale the fumes, then the priest would translate whatever she said into oracles. This is why she is known as the oracle of Delphi.

Lots of people from all over the world came to see her as she was very important in ancient world. The Pythia was always a woman. Delphi was considered as Apollo’s sacred spot so that’s one of the reasons why we visited it. There are all sorts of treasuries that we saw there. The biggest structure there was probably the temple of Apollo, where the oracle would actually sit and do the prophecies.

The reason why I liked our visit to Delphi is because it looks beautiful when you look down on the valley from the top, and the theater offers a great view of it all. The theater is the structure at the top of the part of Delphi that we could access.

There was another section, but that was blocked off with rope. Also it was really frustrating to take pictures because there were a lot of rules about photography equipment and we couldn’t use any of it. We could only use the camera so it was really hard to do anything with it. Because of this we didn’t really get too many pictures, but it was worth it, as we still got to see it and it still looked amazing.
