Ireland’s saint

Today is March 17th, Saint Patrick’s Day! We celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day because a long time ago in the second century, a person named Patrick was born in England. He was born to a wealthy family but later in his life when he was ten, disaster struck. Pirates kidnapped the entire family and brought them to Ireland where they were sold as slaves. Patrick spent a long time as a slave in a farm far away from Britain where he was born. One day he heard a voice telling him to run away and he went to the beach where there was a boat waiting for him and he used it to escape. Then he went to France where he became a priest. When he turned 40 he decided to return to Ireland. There, he taught the people about God and church. There’s a legend that he drove all the snakes away from the island because snakes were a symbol of evil. After he died people became very sad and decided to honour him by making March 17, the date of his death as St. Patrick’s day. He died just before spring and that’s why green is the colour of the day.
