On July 30, 2021, NASA launched its Mars (AKA Percy) mission. Perseverance was meant to be a Mars Rover looking for signs of intelligent life on Mars. But the Rover took 6 months to get to Mars. Then finally on February 18th, 2021, it got ready for landing. One of the researchers that made all of this possible is Dr.Swati Mohan, an Indian American space scientist. The first step of landing of Percy was getting the parachute out. Then the jetpack activated and started getting the coil out perseverance. Then finally after 300 million miles long journey, Perseverance landed on Mars. Surprisingly enough, Percy landed, right next to the Curiosity. Perseverance landing also had a “7 Minutes of Terror” at the end. Those were the last seven minutes before landing during which the ground crew had no contact with the rover. So it could have landed or crashed. But it survived and nothing broke.NASA was so happy. She landed on a crater on Mars, named Jezero. Estimated time for Perseverance to stay there is about one Mars year. That will be 687 Earth days. Perseverance also carried a little helicopter with her. The helicopter is called Ingenuity. Ingenuity got its name from a student in Alabama who suggested the name of Ingenuity for the Rover but NASA rejected it. When they started making the helicopter, NASA scientists thought the name Ingenuity would be fitting for it. And if you’re wondering why all of these rovers are named after human aspects it’s because humans made them and they worked really hard on them. Ingenuity’s purpose is to test for life possibility on Mars. There are twelve cameras in the Perseverance which obviously would be very helpful in finding life forms. Perseverance has another purpose to collect rock and soil samples for possible return to Earth.
We have another historic moment coming up as well. For the first time ever we are going to be able to hear sounds from another planet! Perseverance has two microphones on her to record sounds and this is the first time ever that we’re going to be able to hear it! Also perseverance weighs 2260 pounds. Yeah I know it’s a lot. Also if you’re on the red planet the best donuts there are called Mars Donuts. A famous food chain recently launched Mars themed donuts and now the entire foodie community wants them. This has been a read-along blockbuster but I hope you enjoyed reading about Perseverance and the start of Mars exploration.
