One evening when my family went to get our car from the vehicle repair shop, my dad said mom and I could go back to the house while he waited for the car to be ready and he would catch up to us in the other car. On the way, mom and I decided to make a small detour and went to Tom’s Dairy Freeze. The ice cream parlour was on the side of a motel that looked very rundown. On the other side of the street there was a building that looked like it was owned by Italian Canadians with national flags plastered everywhere. The Italian and Canadian flags stood out like a world’s brightest flower in the world’s darkest room. We got out of the car, crossed the parking lot and joined the line-up that reminded me of an airport security aisle. There we stood in line for about fifteen minutes. Dad kept on calling to remind mom that we had to get home soon as my parents had to go to one of their friends’ house for biking. All of us stood apart in the line. On the ground there were lines that indicated six feet. I was starting to feel really impatient as there were fifteen people in front of us. The line was extending towards the front of a busy street about to block the sidewalk. Behind us, kids biking, pulled out of the side walk and parked their bikes. They stood in the line chatting about what flavour of ice cream they should get. They did not put on their masks on until we were second in line. One of the boys looked like one of my old class mates from the Olivet school. The menu displays at the parlour were both big and small. The big ones had photos of the ice cream you could get and the cost, size and the names of the ice cream flavours. The smallest ones were holding tiny advertisements such as SOFT CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM! The BANANA split ad caught my attention. It was the most colorful ad and looked really weird. It was floating in mid- air and had no bowl.
Then I wondered why the ice cream on the picture did not look like it was melting.
I personally think they should have added a realistic appearance to it. By realistic I mean make it look like it is melting. I was so shocked when mom told me that BANANA SPLIT was just bananas with ice cream on top. I thought that banana splits were something fancy and served with special syrups and toppings. The man who was standing in front of us had a deep voice, blonde hair and six feet stature. I couldn’t see his eyes as he was wearing sunglasses. When it was his turn to order ice cream the family in front of him had a problem with cash. So, he decided to pay for the young lady and her little daughter. The petite woman and her kid had black curly hair and were African Canadians. I don’t know why he tried to help the lady but I would have done it anyways even if I didn’t have a reason. I do have a small theory about this: It’s because of the BLACK LIVES MATTER protests happening in America now. In Canada we think racism exists nowhere. In France they have an entire week devoted to anti-racism. Science proves that there is only one race and it’s HOMOSAPIENS!
It turned out that the lady had cash in her credit card, so the man continued with his order. When it was our turn we noticed a sign that said CASH ONLY. Oh no, we didn’t carry any cash. As we decided to return home very grumpily, the vendor asked us why we looked a bit disappointed. He tried to help us and said that there was an ATM on the side of the ice cream parlour but mom’s card did not work. The man said we could come back tomorrow to pay and happily served me a chocolate ice cream in a cone. My mom got her vanilla ice cream served with caramel swirl in a cup. Don’t you think the man did a great act of kindness? I do. He took a great risk telling us we could get the ice cream and pay for it the next day. We could have not gone back and paid for it.
I have a hypothesis on why he did that. In the Covid pandemic we all must try and help each other. Research has shown that social distancing (staying apart two meters) prevents the spread of the virus but that does not mean we should separate our minds. We should keep them closer instead, MORE THAN EVER. Everybody needs support during this pandemic. I was really nervous as this was my first outing for fun after the lockdown. I am a bit relaxed now after seeing how people are treating others.
